Underland
The Underland project is a journey into life below ground.
From climate refugees to voracious miners, doomsday sects to marooned indigenous communities; millions of people around the world live out their lives in caves, pits and bunkers underground.
With my colleague, photographer Tamara Merino, we set out to find out how, why and where people live underground in the 21st century. From 2015 to 2019, Tamara traveled to Australia, Spain and the US, before we teamed up in 2023 to explore cave-dwelling communities in Tunisia, Lesotho, Jordan and Turkey.
This reporting was supported by a Level II Explorer Grant from the National Geographic Society.
